Are you ready to put the winter blahs behind you and spring forward to warmer, healthier weather? I certainly am as the Director of Fulfillment here at HMI Performance Incentives. Every year as we start to turn the proverbial corner, I begin looking through our incentive catalog to see what new and exciting incentive rewards are on tap to be updated or enhanced. Every spring, our customer service team tells me about participants who are looking to break out of their winter hibernation by redeeming for the latest and greatest in electronics, sports & leisure, health & wellness, and warm-weather items. They’re checking the HMI catalog to see what’s new, what’s available, and part of my job is to make sure they can find what they’re looking for.

Managing a dynamic channel incentive program can be an arduous task. Managing such a program in a single country can be a challenge, but when it’s on a global scale it can be a logistical nightmare. In the past, we’ve discussed some of the issues that can arise with any global incentive solution; but today, I want to talk about just one.

The direct mail industry has gone through numerous changes over the years. The old mantra of mailing millions of static pieces with a “see what sticks to the wall” approach- and hoping for a 1-2% response rate, is being replaced by a more targeted and interactive approach.

In our last blog entry, HMI discussed a number of different ways you can bolster the engagement of members participating in your sales or marketing channel. We also referenced an idea that has become increasingly useful in recent years, namely the relation between a naturally occurring ecosystem and the habitat of a channel. While we’re all at least vaguely familiar – thanks biology class! – with the elementary workings of a naturally occurring ecosystem, understanding how a sales channel functions and thrives can be a bit more opaque.

Customer service is critical in all businesses, especially in the incentive world. With more and more companies outsourcing this service, HMI has made a commitment to always have our own customer service employees, because having our own customer service really can help with the overall success of a program.

After many years in the incentives industry, I still get asked the same questions over and over. Though I could fill many pages with those questions and their answers, two of the most fundamental questions are: 1). Which rewards are the most motivating? and 2). Which rewards are the most popular? The first question has a range of responses and varies based on target audience, length of program, etc. and is far too complicated for a blog post (although if you’re interested in the cash vs. non-cash awards debate click here to read a blog post by my colleague Matt Slane).

What does a participant want from an incentive program today? What makes them feel that they are being appreciated for all of their hard work supporting your company? It has been proven that employee incentive programs are important in instilling brand loyalty and boosting sales, but it is also helpful to understand what your participant is looking for in their rewards program.
